Network Homes brings in life time tenancies

11 December 2019

Network Homes has decided to bring in life time tenancies for all new tenants and convert all existing fixed term tenancies.

This means we’ll stop giving new tenants fixed term tenancies immediately. Every new tenant of a social rent or affordable rent home will be given an assured tenancy which lasts as long as they want it.

For existing fixed term tenants, we’ll look at what is the most practical way of converting your tenancy. We’d like to convert them all soon, but it’s possible that we’ll phase them, or we wait until the end of the five-year term to renew them as assured tenancies. Whatever approach we take, we guarantee that as long as you don't breach your tenancy agreement you won’t be evicted from your home.

Since 2011 we’ve offered five-year fixed term tenancies to some new tenants as a way to ensure, over the long run, that our limited homes go to households most in need. But only 3.4% of tenants on fixed term tenancies left after their five-year term, and for this small number it’s not worth the uncertainty other fixed term tenants must feel about whether they’ll be able to keep their home in the future.

We’ll be in touch in with tenants on fixed term tenancies to let you know of the next steps.
